Purpose: To evaluate the imaging findings of pure ductal carcinoma in situ diagnosed at screening.
Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the mammographic and sonographic findings of patients who were diagnosed as breast ductal carcinoma in situ at screening. Mammographic findings were divided according to the main abnormality; calcifications or abnormal density. BI-RADS categories of the calcifications were evaluated. We evaluated the sonographic findings according to the presence of mass.
Results: Mammography detected 79/92(85.9%) of pure ductal carcinoma in situ, and the main abnormality was calcifications. Breast sonography detected 77/92(83.7%) of the lesions, and 34/48(70.8%) patients who had calcifications only on screening mammography. Breast sonography detected additional 13/92(14.1%) patients with pure ductal carcinoma in situ, who had negative mammographic findings.
Conclusion: Calcifications on mammography was the main abnormality of pure ductal carcinoma in situ, detected on the breast cancer screening. Breast sonography can detect additional ductal carcinoma in situ which shows negative mammographic finding.
